JOB DESCRIPTION:
Virginia Crane is actively seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer, a fulltime salaried position in Ashland, VA. This is an office position, and remote work or work from home are not available.
- Minimum of 10 years of direct experience designing Overhead and Gantry Cranes per standard crane specifications.
- Review complex project technical documentation and data from customer and outside sales representatives to determine if all required information is available to adequately design the material handling equipment.
- Understand and implement mechanical and structural designs per specifications and standards (CMAA, ASME, AWS, ANSI, AISC, SAE, and applicable OSHA codes and Standards etc.)
- Perform engineering tasks using established procedures. Create equipment layouts, undertake all necessary mechanical and structural calculations to confirm designs and generate final mechanical and structural designs.
- Prepare GA clearance drawings and engineering calculations for customer design review and discussions.
- Calculate component center of gravities and weights in support of building runway design.
- Develop structural/mechanical and FEA (Finite Element Analysis) models using Autodesk Simulation for complex component analysis.
- Utilize SolidWorks to produce and/or review welding and machining and other typical mechanical engineering 2D and 3D drawings complete with detailed dimensional and BOM information for fabrication.
- Support fabrication and machine shops with technical inquiries. Modify, critique released designs per customer specification and standards.
- Prepare mechanical data sheet, purchase requisition, review vendors drawings and documents in product and sub-component fabrication
- Perform structural calculations required to design Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices in accordance with ASME BTH-1-2011 and ASME B30.20
- Design of Overhead and Gantry Cranes, select calculations for material handling equipment, motors, gear boxes, couplings, bearings, etc.
- Manage multiple material handling projects from concept thru completion including, but not limited to, engineering design, Approval and Manufacturing drawings and technical guidance during fabrication, assembly and installation
- Prepare an installation package that contains the drawings, special instruction, and other information that communicates all necessary technical information to installers/ subcontractors
- Communicate effectively and professionally with customers, outside sales representative, and cross-departmental team members throughout the entire project.
- Mechanical hands-on aptitude with troubleshooting knowledge.

Responsible for the demolition and erection of overhead crane systems. Successful candidate should posses the following:
- Leadership skills and a strong desire to work safely and efficiently in a industrial environment.
- Strong rigging skills, to include preparation of rigging plans.

Primary responsibility is to provide inspections, maintenance and repairs of hoist and crane equipment. Breakdowns will require troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical components and circuits.
Tasks and responsibilities include the following:
- Inspect overhead industrial cranes and hoists to verify safety and compliance with manufacturer, OSHA and ANSI standards.
- Troubleshoot and repair overhead material handling equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical equipment (strong knowledge of motor controls).
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance activities on equipment.
- Support customers by effectively interfacing with customer and office in repairing equipment as needed.
- Evaluate and make recommendations regarding required repairs.
- Provide a high level of communication with both customer and office.

The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of AC/DC theory, ability to trouble-shoot 480VAC 3-phase motor control systems and strong mechanical aptitude, all of which has been developed through a minimum 2 years of experience in an industrial maintenance environment and/or equivalent military experience. Must also have a valid driver license, demonstrate a proven commitment to safety, and be comfortable working at heights. Some overnight travel may be required.

We are actively seeking an individual with overhead and mobile crane experience. The primary responsibilities for this position consist of reporting to several jobsites throughout the day to provide quality inspections and maintain of overhead lifting equipment. Previous experience with crane and hoist operations, electrical or mechanical experience is a plus.
Tasks and responsibilities include the following:
- Inspect overhead and mobile cranes to verify safety and compliance with manufacturers, OSHA regulations and ANSI/ASME standards.
- Work and train with field Inspectors for proficiency with inspection, troubleshooting and all aspects of repairs.
- Become an Overhead Crane Inspector and a Mobile Crane Inspector as soon as possible.
- Must be willing to work as needed, including overtime, overnight travel required as necessary.
- Inspect structural components, operating mechanisms, control systems, braking systems, hydraulic and pneumatic components, electrical equipment and safety devices.
- Responsible for the initiation and verification of corrective action measures to correct discrepancies identified during the performance of inspection activities and must appropriately report nonconformance.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance activities on equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair operating mechanisms, control systems, braking systems, hydraulic and pneumatic components, electrical equipment and safety devices.
- Support customers by effectively interfacing with customer and office in repairing equipment as needed.
- Evaluate and make recommendations regarding required repairs
- Provide a high level of communication with both customer and office.

Skills and knowledge required:
- High school diploma or equivalent and two years related experience with similar types of equipment and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of inspection procedures for structural components, booms, jibs, gears, drums, sheaves, blocks, hooks, operating mechanisms, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, hydraulic cylinders, wire rope, and operational aids is a plus.
- Knowledge of inspection procedures for bridges, end trucks, trolleys, runways, rails, foot walks, gears, drums, sheaves, blocks, hooks, and operating mechanisms, control systems, braking systems, hydraulic & pneumatic components, electrical equipment, safety devices and operational aids is a plus.
- Knowledge and ability to interpret OSHA and ANSI/ASME overhead & mobile crane inspection requirements is a plus.
- Ability to conduct nondestructive testing and recognize immediate and potential hazard.
- Proven electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills.
- Knowledge and ability to read and understand schematic and repair manuals.
- Ability to analyze problems, recommend solutions, and initiate repairs.
- Certification as a crane operator, forklift operator and manlift operator including high reach equipment is a plus.
- Use a variety of hand tools and testing equipment.
- Attention to detail excellent verbal, written communication and follow up skills; completes and distributes appropriate paperwork.
- Good computer abilities with PDA/smartphone experience
- Friendly, cooperative, customer service-minded attitude; team player.
